Computer Aided Design (CAD) Part 1

Computer Aided Design (CAD) Tutorial 1

For the first lesson in this module, I was tasked to create a digital nametag using an application called Fusion 360. Fusion 360 is a CAD/CAM/CAE tool that can be used to develop products. This assignment is similar to the assignment we did for CAD last semester, and it serves as a refresher for Fusion 360.

For this assignment, I am using a video as a guide. The video's link can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2yezZKNiOo

When you open up Fusion 360, it will open up a new project. You can select any past projects by clicking the 3x3 squares found on the top right of the interface, then selecting the project. However for this assignment, I shall start from scratch. This is what the interface should look like at first.

To begin, I clicked on "create sketch" and selected the bottom plane. This is what the interface should look like now. The view should now be elevated from above.

Next, I selected "2-point rectangle" and dragged my cursor from the origin to the left side to create a rectangle. I adjusted it to make it 65mm x 25mm.

Then, I selected "offset" and selected the rectangle. This brings up a text box where I put the value of 2mm. This is what the sketch should look like now.

After that, I selected "fillet" and clicked on the four outer corners of the rectangle to round the corners, with 5mm as the radius. This is what the sketch should look like now.

Next, I created a line by clicking on "line", then right-clicking said line and selected "normal/construction". Then, by selecting "dimension", I clicked the outer wall of the rectangle on the left and dragged to the line, followed by making the distance between both walls 7mm. This is what the sketch should look like now.

Then, I clicked on "create>point" and selected the middle of the line. After that, I selected "Center Diameter Circle" and created a 5mm circle at the point. This is what the sketch should look like now.

After that, I selected "create>text" and clicked on two opposite points inside the sketch to create a text box to insert my name. Using the "Impact" font, I entered my name and adjusted the sizing and height accordingly to fit inside the nametag. This is what the sketch should look like now.

After this, I selected "finish sketch", then clicked on the base of the nametag (be careful to not select the hole) and selected "extrude" to extrude the base by 3mm. This is what the sketch should look like now.

At the middle left of the interface, disable the "eye" icon beside "bodies" and enable the "eye" icon beside "sketch" and "sketch1". This is what the interface should look like now.

Now, while holding the "ctrl" key on the keyboard, click on the border and the text. Select "extrude" and type in 1.5mm. Then, from the extrude menu, change the plane beside "start" from "profile plane" to "offset". Enter 3mm as the offset. After that, click on the "eye" icon beside "bodies" and "sketch". This is what the finalised product should look like.

Conclusion
In the upcoming lessons in this module, our group is going to be making use of Fusion 360. This assignment serves as a refresher in the basic functions in Fusion 360 and will prove useful in our future assignments. The HTML file of my nametag can be seen below.
